Kaley Cuoco, Minnie Driver and Selma Blair Horse Around With Veuve Clicquot
- Polo player Nacho Figueras
PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. — The sport of kings descended upon the city of angels Saturday in the form of the third annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.
The historic Will Rogers Polo Field — the last regulation size polo field in Los Angeles — played host to Nacho Figueras, the Argentine player who’s also the face of Ralph Lauren’s Polo fragrances, and his team Black Watch.
The event drew inspiration from the famous 1922 polo match in Delhi, India where Patiala faced Jodhpur. A host of celebrities turned out for the event, including horse enthusiasts Kaley Cuoco, Minnie Driver and Selma Blair. Rose McGowan, Mandy Moore, Ashley Madekwe and Jerry O’Connell also came for the event.
“The only image I have in my head when I think of polo is ‘Pretty Woman,’” said Rose McGowan, who was wearing a Philip Lim jumpsuit and Brian Atwood heels. “I wanted to change that,” she added.
The polo field was created in 1926 by Will Rogers for his personal use. The Western star also erected a house on the site. Proceeds from the event went to the preservation of Will Rogers State Historic Park Walt Disney DIS +0.50%, Errol Flynn, Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable could often be found swinging mallets on the polo field, a notion that was distinctly Californian.
“In New York you have the skyline and the grand outdoor adventure,” said Figueras, who was sporting a black eye due to an accident with a polo mallet earlier in the week. “In Los Angeles you have the ability to revive a story that combined entertainment and sport,” the polo player added.
Thousands of spectators packed the field for the match, in part due to Figueras’ collaboration with stylist-to-the-stars Rachel Zoe. For the last several years, Figueras has been working to make polo more accessible to the masses, partnering with celebrities and companies alike to host events.
“We own this elegant event in New York and Los Angeles,” said Jean-Marc Lacave, president of Veuve Clicquot. But Lacave said he’s looking to expand the sport, and the Veuve Clicquot festivities, to China and Russia.
Long considered the sport of kings, polo requires eight players, four per team, riding four different horses (one per chukker, a seven-and-a-half minute period of play). Riders can reach speeds of 40 miles an hour on a horse and have the ability to score on either end of the field.
Cuoco, who owns four horses and goes riding five days a week, said she was “curious to see” how the sport differed from her jumpers.
Driver, who equates polo with white dresses and red lips, was wearing head-to-toe Prada. She grew up around polo fields just outside London and said being at the event “felt like part of my childhood. The feel, the smell, it’s just home.”

Meet Ron Bonaguidi. President of the San Diego Polo Club.
We wanted to know more about Ron Bonaguidi, so this clever guy made us a list!

Gold, cigars and luxury brands boosted revenues at Abu Dhabi Duty Free by 29 per cent in the first half of the year to Dh380 million (US$103.4m).
The airport retailer experienced record-breaking second-quarter sales and outperformed the passenger traffic rise at Abu Dhabi International Airport in the first half, which increased 22.8 per cent.
The first-half figures for duty free represent a 29.1 rise on the corresponding period last year.
“The continued dynamic growth of the second-quarter sales is due to a combination of factors. [Abu Dhabi Airport Company’s] core objective is to continuously invest in passenger amenities, levels of customer service and real innovation and exclusivity within [its] retail offering,” said Mohammed Al Bulooki, the chief commercial officer at Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac). The company said the luxury brands Burberry, Hermes and Bulgari had all performed strongly, as well as food, cigars and perfume.
